The Green family lives at the Double E Rancho about two miles outside of Greendale. The Double E is the home of Sun Green, an 18-year-old girl who goes to school in Greendale, and she's a cheerleader. And she's a good student. And her mom and dad, Earl Green and Edith Green. Earl Green is a Vietnam vet. (Voice in audience: Why?) I don't know why, actually. It's a question that's been haunting everybody for ages. There wouldn't be any vets without war, so I guess we have to go back to war. Like most vets, he wanders around trying to forget what he knows. And he's a painter. He paints psychedelic paintings and he tries to sell them at the galleries around town and in the area, without much luck. He hardly ever sells a painting.

 

Sun really loves his paintings, though, because when you look at the paintings you don't see anything at all until you really focus on them for a while. And then faces and conversations, arguments and love affairs all start jumping out of the painting at you. Sun would like to be an artist herself someday, maybe a performance artist. She has some ideas, though. She's working on something right now, and she's taking a lot of hay out into the field and working on something she hasn't shown anybody yet. She has a little truck, puts about 20 bales of hay on the back of it and takes it out in the middle of the field. She's taken a lot of hay out there.

 

But tonight she's doing her homework. She's doing a book report on a book called "How to Use the Media." And she's also doing a special essay on saving the wilderness - specifically Alaska, which is one of her favorite places.
