Aurora borealis
The icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man to the fields of green

They killed us in our tepee
And they cut our women down

They massacred the buffalo

I would give thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt

Will be there by the fire

And the Astrodome and the first tepee

Aurora Boreal.
Gélido cielo nocturno.
Los remos hienden el agua
en un largo y precipitado vuelo
del hombre blanco a las verdes praderas,
a la tierra que nunca vimos.

Nos mataron en nuestros tipis (*1*)
y abatieron a nuestras mujeres.
Puede que dejaran a unos cuantos bebés
llorando en el suelo
pero las varas de fuego y las carretas llegaron
y la noche siguió al ocaso.

Exterminaron los búfalos
pasada la esquina del banco.
Los taxis me pisan los pies
y mi mirada se posa sobre
la cajita del altillo de la escalera
conteniendo mi manta india y una pipa.

Si hubiese sido trampero
habría dado mil pieles
por dormir con Pocahontas
y experimentar lo que sentía
durante el amanecer en las praderas,
en la tierra que nunca vimos.

Y puede que nos encontremos
a Marlon Brando junto al fuego.
Nos sentaremos y hablaremos de Hollywood
y de lo bueno que tienen en alquiler,
el Astrodome (*2*) y el primer tipi.

  1. Tipi: (Del inglés tepee, voz de origen sioux).
    Tienda de piel de forma cónica que utilizaban como vivienda los indios de las praderas de América del Norte. (Definición R.A.E.)
     
  2. Astrodome: 'The Reliant Astrodome', más conocido por "the Astrodome", es un palacio de deportes cubierto, considerado el primero en su clase. Se encuentra en Houston (Texas) y forma parte del complejo 'Reliant Park'. Abrió sus puertas en 1965 y fue apodado "la octava maravilla del mundo".
